The 23rd Wing is testing its ability to prepare, deploy and execute their mission at a moment’s notice this week, Dec. 4 -7 with its first Phase 1, Phase 2 exercise in several years, here.

The week-long exercise will test operations, maintenance and logistics while demonstrating the 23rd Wing's ability to rapidly deploy to meet the needs of combatant commanders.

“These types of exercises are how we prepare for tomorrow,” said Col. Jennifer Short, 23rd Wing commander. “Our ability to meet the demand of combatant commanders downrange is directly tied to our ability to train and equip our Airmen.

Testing our capabilities ensures the Wing and our Airmen are ready to meet the mission in a dynamic global environment,”

Exercises, like a Phase 1 and Phase 2, keep Airmen ready for any short-notice deployments and allow units to assess and improve their procedures.

During the week, Wing Inspection Team evaluators will be accessing aircraft generation, aircrew readiness and the mobilization of cargo.

“We will be also be looking at the aircrew’s ability to fly around the clock during surge operations,” said Maj. Joseph Morrin, 23rd Wing director of inspections. “During surge operations the sortie timeline is accelerated, so aircrew will fly with shorter turn times to simulate what we may see in a combat environment. Surge operations test our ability to meet a higher demand operations tempo."

“Overall this week will demonstrate the wing's ability to quickly generate aircraft, personnel and cargo to get out of town in a short period of time for contingency operations,” added Morrin.
